The Birthing Story

On Thursday, March 3, 2011, at 6 a.m., Mitch and I went into Mercy Medical Center. I was looking like this: (this was taken at 38 weeks. On this day I was just over 39 weeks)

We were pre-registered so we went up to Labor and Delivery where we signed consent forms and got ready for the day. The night nurses couldn't find the doctor's orders for some reason. But, when the shift changed at 7, our new, wonderful nurse was able to find them. We got the IV started and at 8 the doctor came in and broke my water and started the pitocin. The wait began. At first things weren't bad. Mitch and I played cards and watched a little HOUSE. At around 10:30, the contractions were beginning to be a little uncomfortable. Knowing they were going to get worse, I asked for the epidural. Around 11 I got it. At first it was only working on my legs and left side. They had me lay on my right side to see if they could get it to flow to that side. Mitch thought he would be so sweet and take a picture at this point:

When they had me lay on that side, it took all the epidural off my stomach so I was back to feeling the contractions. The anesthesiologist came back and put me back on my back and turned the epidural up ever so slightly and I was in relief. It was perfect. I could feel the tightening but not the pain of the contractions. Around 12:45, the nurse and I forced Mitch to go and get some lunch. Around 1:15 I started feeling some pressure, but wasn't sure what it was so just kept waiting. Mitch got back around 1:30 and I mentioned to the nurse that I was continuously feeling pressure with each contraction. She checked and sure enough, I was at a 10 and the baby was crowning. She immediately called the doctor and told me not to cough because he was at the Bella Vista clinic, about 30 minutes away. The nurse started running around getting everything ready. I am just focusing on not pushing and trying not to laugh with Mitch. Around 2:05, the doctor got there and got suited up. We began pushing at about 2:09 and after around 4 pushes and 2:10. little Nathan was born. It was a great birth experience for me. A lot different than 14.5 hours with Eric and pushing for 2.5. So, on Friday, we got to head home with this sweet little addition:

It's amazing how you can love something so much and not have known it for more than a few minutes. Welcome to our family, Nate!
